Choose an AI Illustration Tool from the Figure Brief

Match labels, relationships, source material and revision requirements before comparing visual styles.

“Best” changes with the figure. A microscopy result, a quantitative chart and a conceptual mechanism require different sources of truth. Use the following selection exercise to build a workflow instead of ranking unrelated tools by one generated image.

Start with a concrete three-panel job

Suppose a manuscript needs A: a cell-culture workflow, B: a measured viability chart, and C: a microscopy field. The example contains no real experimental findings.

PanelStart fromAI’s appropriate role
A: WorkflowReviewed protocol and relationship listDraft a conceptual composition
B: ViabilityAnalysis data and plotting codeHelp explain the plot, not invent values
C: MicroscopyOriginal image and analysis recordKeep evidentiary pixels outside generative editing

Only panel A is a straightforward candidate for illustration generation. The final layout can combine all three after they are independently checked.

Give the illustration tools the same bounded task

Create a conceptual workflow: Seed cells → Apply treatment → Measure viability. Three equal panels, two right arrows, labels exactly as written. Use neutral flat shapes. Do not draw a bar chart, microscopy texture, percentages or a treatment effect.

This prompt prevents the drafting stage from silently inventing a result panel. If a tool adds a numerical curve anyway, reject that addition rather than scoring it as helpful detail.

Model families also need exact identification. Consult OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 page and Google’s image model documentation when those models are part of the tested service. A product’s interface, export path and operation cost remain separate from its underlying model.

Score the workflow with weights you declare

For this job, a hypothetical team might assign 40% to correct relationships, 30% to local revision, 20% to export handoff and 10% to active working time. Rate each criterion from 0 to 5, then compute a weighted score.

For illustrative ratings 5, 3, 4 and 2, the score is 0.4Ă—5 + 0.3Ă—3 + 0.2Ă—4 + 0.1Ă—2 = 3.9 out of 5. These are invented teaching ratings, not measurements of any named product. Declare the weights before testing so that a preferred result does not determine the scoring rule afterward.

Treat source permissions and unacceptable scientific errors as pass/fail gates, not weaknesses that a beautiful style can compensate for.

Test the final assembly

Place the actual plot and micrograph beside the reviewed schematic. Check consistent panel labels and font sizes at the intended physical width. Inspect the smallest text and read actual source dimensions. Keep a viewing copy for review and an editable master for later revisions.

Make a specific recommendation

Recommend a workflow for the stated job: drafting tool for A, analysis software for B, image-analysis source for C, then layout and export inspection. Record tested versions, attempts, repairs and current plan requirements. That is more useful to another researcher than an unsupported universal winner.
